It all started when…
The Gallagher family established a new homestead in Chester, Nova Scotia and an idea to create an urban orchard (small growing operation sized for a residential plot of land). We wanted to till the land with our own hands and take on the challenges of cultivating a crop. But what to grow? It had to be a resilient plant for the Atlantic Canada climate but promising new health benefits. We didn’t feel the pull to our potato farming family heritage and avocados are only consumed here at the 45th North latitude. Our research led us to interesting work by Canadian scholars and the agricultural industry on the Haskap berry (known as honeyberries in USA)
